SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – April’s Classroom Hero is a teacher who goes a long way to making her campus more beautiful.

The children at Oak Hill Elementary School are greeted each morning with works of art on the walls, birdhouses in the trees, and even hanging gardens.

Jennifer Tompkins took it upon herself to spruce up the school with the help of her students.

“It happened about four years ago. We were walking around campus and it’s a beautiful spot but really boring, so we decided to do something about it. And we got together and wrote a grant from the Escondido Education Foundation and they gave us $2,500 to get us started,” said Tompkins.

Kids did the work with help from a local artist. They also learn about team building and taking care of the environment when they maintain the gardens.

“We’re trying to instill in them a sense of that they can make a difference, and it doesn’t take much,” Tompkins said. “They need to be thinking that they are the future, that they are the solution to everything. They are our future.”
