What we are aiming at

The target is WCAG 2.1 Level AA. The site was built to that standard rather than checked against it afterwards, which is a different and better thing.

What that meant in practice

• Contrast was calculated, not eyeballed. Every text colour was computed against the colour behind it before it was chosen. The lowest ratio anywhere on the site is 4.8 to 1, above the 4.5 the standard asks for.
• Everything works from the keyboard. The menus, the board biography windows, the language switcher and the forms can all be reached and operated with Tab, Enter and Escape, and what has focus is always visibly outlined.
• The page makes sense read aloud. Headings run in order, images carry descriptions, buttons say what they do, and the parts of the page are marked up so a screen reader can jump between them.
• Nothing depends on hovering. Anything you can reveal by hovering can also be reached by tapping or by keyboard, which matters on a phone as much as it does for assistive technology.
• Touch targets. Buttons and the standalone links are at least 44 pixels tall on a phone.
• Text resizes. Type is set in relative units, so enlarging text in your browser works without the layout falling apart.
• Motion is optional. If your device is set to reduce motion, animations and smooth scrolling turn themselves off.
• Skip link. The first thing a keyboard reaches on every page is a link that jumps past the menu to the content.

Where we know it falls short

Being straight with you is more useful than a clean claim.

• The newsletter archive. Those are PDFs produced outside this website, and they have not been checked for accessibility. If you need the contents of any issue in another format, ask us and we will send it to you.
• Translated pages. Choosing another language runs the site through machine translation. It is good enough to understand, and it is not as carefully written as the English, which is the version we control.
• Grant reports. Some older reports written by educators include photographs whose descriptions are thinner than we would like. We are improving them as we go.

If something does not work for you

Please tell us. A specific note, for example which page and what happened, helps most, but any message is welcome. We treat this as a bug report rather than a complaint, and we will reply within two business days and tell you what we intend to do about it.

If you cannot use part of this site, we will get you the information another way, by phone, by email, or on paper.
