I had the opportunity to visit Oak Hill Elementary today to see “Family Reading Room” in action.  I wish more of you had been able to visit…it makes the time and effort you put into the Foundation worth every moment!

Gianina Whiting is the school liaison and she has developed a program to encourage parents and students to read together.  She had an introductory event at which 86 parents came and read with their children.

Today’s event was in her classroom.  She has a class of 15 parents who discussed the book of the day; read it together, and discussed the pictures, the theme of the story, the possible outcome, etc.  These moms (and grandmothers) took the book and several fun worksheets home with them.  Their assignment is to read with their child (book is in English and Spanish) and do some of the activities together.  They all checked their books out and will return them at the next meeting.

The parents attending were totally engaged.  I know they will go home and read with their child/children.  I saw a few mom’s take extra worksheets.  Please take peek at the attached pictures!
